To All MPCA Member Clubs,
Following earlier discussion today between Tyabb CC, Cricket Victoria and MPCA, we advise that Cricket Victoria have issued a media release.
Taking into account the wishes of the Tyabb CC they are now of the view that the wearing of black arm bands is appropriate by all member clubs of the MPCA as a mark of respect and support to the family and friends of Luke Batty and the Tyabb Cricket Club on this weekend.
Could all Clubs please ensure they consider the comments by Cricket Victoria in regard to age appropriateness for the wearing of arm bands as shown in Italics at the bottom of the press release.
Most of you will now be aware of the tragic event concerning a family from the Tyabb Cricket Club. As like all Members within the MPCA and I am sure the community at large, we the Board are shocked at what has occurred.
The MPCA Board has been in discussions with the Tyabb Cricket Club to offer our assistance to the family and the Tyabb Cricket Club itself.
The Tyabb Cricket Club has informed the MPCA that they do not wish to participate in Junior or Senior games fixtured for this weekend. The MPCA respect this position and have agreed to this request.
With that in mind Tyabb have requested that the Senior Teams be allowed to play one day games next week as they wish to show their respect on the field to the family and members of their club.
We certainly understand the concern from MPCA Clubs along with their views as to what should or could occur however we would ask that you understand the Tyabb Cricket Club has the utmost concern for their members in mind along with the family involved at this point in time. The Tyabb Cricket Club has appreciated the many condolences being sent to the club and wish to thank all those who have sent them.
Tyabb C.C would also like to have clubs understand that a police investigation into this matter is currently underway and therefore are not at this point in time able to make any statements relating to the events.
Regarding showing respect through black arm bands and a minute silence by MPCA Clubs this weekend, this has been raised and discussed with grief counsellors. They have advised that given the tragedy is so recent, this action could still cause grief for some people particularly Junior players. It is therefore asked Clubs to consider delaying this until next weekend when they may be able to join Tyabb CC showing their respect for the family, members of the club and the Tyabb Community.
The MPCA will endeavour to inform Clubs as soon as we can as to any further wishes from the Tyabb Cricket Club.
